Onglyza is a diabetes treatment that is taken orally. This prescription medicine works by controlling and regulating the levels of insulin your body produces after eating.
Onglyza has been clinically proven to keep blood sugar levels under control. For best results this treatment should be combined with a healthy diabetic diet and exercise. It may be prescribed on its own or used in conjunction with insulin and other Type 2 diabetes treatment options.
Onglyza is used to aid people with Type 2 diabetes. It can be used in combination with other diabetes medication, but not for Type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes results from the pancreas’ inability to produce enough insulin that is then inadequately used by the body. This results in blood sugar levels becoming dangerously high. Onglyza helps to control blood sugar levels effectively. It is a recommended treatment if diet, exercise and other oral diabetic medications have failed to control glucose levels. This medication can also be used in combination with insulin and certain other diabetes medications.
You can order this diabetes medication online from euroClinix after completing an online consultation. If approved, your prescription will then be passed on to our registered pharmacy, and the treatment will be sent out free of charge for delivery the next day.
Onglyza contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, which works by increasing the two hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP). Normally produced by the body as a result of food ingested, they work to control glucose levels. They do this by helping the pancreas produce more insulin and reducing the production of the hormone that increases glucose (glucagon), all of which controls sugar blood levels effectively. It is usually prescribed to complement other treatments that are not effective on their own, but is also prescribed on its own.
Onglyza is suitable for people with Type 2 diabetes who have not experienced an improvement in the control of their blood sugar levels after dietary changes, increased exercise and other medication. This medication is not suitable if you are allergic to saxagliptin or any other ingredients in this medication. If you have Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney or liver problems, severe and persistent abdomen pain or acute pancreatitis then Onglyza will not be prescribed. Certain other medications, including other diabetes medications, should not be taken with Onglyza. This medication is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The recommended dose for Onglyza is 5mg, which should be taken once daily, preferably with glass of water and at the same time everyday. If you have kidney problems or other health ailments, your doctor may reduce your dose to 2.5mg.
If you forget to take a tablet then take the missed tablet straightaway, unless it is near to the time for your next dose, in which case you should skip the missed dose. You should never take a double dose while taking this medication. Speak to a doctor if this occurs.
Before you take Onglyza you should read the enclosed instructions, or download them from the bottom of this page.
Saxagliptin is the active ingredient in Onglyza. Saxagliptin belongs to a category of medicines called a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor. This category of medicine is used to treat type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes.
The role of saxagliptin is to increase the quantity of two-incretin hormones located in the body called glucagon-like peptides-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide. The production of these hormones within the body is normally natural, in response to food in-take. Their purpose is to help regulate and control blood sugar levels.
GLP-1 and GIP controls glucose in two different ways.
The pancreas is stimulated by GLP-1 and GIP, to react to rising levels of glucose in the blood.
The production of glucagon is also lowered by GLP-1.
An enzyme in the body called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 breaks down GLP-1 and GIP. The role of saxagliptin is to bind with this enzyme and prevent it from breaking down GLP-1 and GIP. The effectiveness when regulating levels of blood sugar rise by this process increasing the levels of these hormones in the body.
